GOALS from Xabi Alonso, Yossi Benayoun and Steven Gerrard at Ewood Park gave Liverpool victory and cemented their place at the top of the table.

Alonso opened the scoring with a low drive in the 68th minute and Benayoun extended their lead 11 minutes later with a superb solo effort.

Blackburn got a consolation goal in the 86th minute through Roque Santa Cruz but Gerrard had the last word in stoppage time.

Liverpool began the match looking to find the target for the first time in three league games.

However, they were almost caught cold in the sixth minute when Morten Gamst Pedersen got clear in the penalty area, only to send his cross into the arms of goalkeeper Jose Reina to the disbelief of the home supporters.

Tugay then tried to release Roque Santa Cruz but put too much weight on the pass and the Reina was able to make the interception.

It was an encouraging start by Blackburn and Pedersen swung in a corner after 13 minutes, only for Santa Cruz’s touch to let him down.

Liverpool, though, almost took the lead in their first attack after 19 minutes following superb vision from Dirk Kuyt.

He released Benayoun with a marvellous pass but the ball was taken off his toes by Stephen Warnock as he shaped to shoot.

It was little wonder the Blackburn full-back got a pat on the back from goalkeeper Paul Robinson for a crucial tackle.

Blackburn nearly made the breakthrough in the 29th minute when Gerrard lost possession to Pedersen.

The Norway midfielder raced on and rattled in a 25-yard shot but Reina reacted superbly to push it onto the bar.

The visitors were having the majority of the ball and playing a patient game, but were finding it difficult to break down the home side.

They were again forced on the back foot in the 39th minute and Reina showed good reflexes to push Pedersen’s free-kick from distance around the post.

The home fans suddenly found their voice and that seemed to give the side some much-needed confidence.

Liverpool responded three minutes later when Gerrard got into a good position but he failed to test Robinson and sent his shot wide of the post.

Then Gerrard tried to pick out Kuyt but Robinson was alert to the danger and made the save.

Blackburn were eager to make a bright start in the second half in front of their second best crowd of the season - 26,920.

However it was Liverpool who broke away in the 55th minute with Babel delivering a cross into the area.

Warnock, though, was well positioned and booted the ball to safety as the move broke down.
