Irish media say Robbie Keane's future at Liverpool appears even more uncertain after manager Rafa Benitez was told he will have to sell players to raise funds if he wishes to strengthen Liverpool's squad in January.
The club's owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, are unlikely to sanction any significant transfer spending unless Benitez can generate money by trimming the fat from his squad as the Anfield club prepare for their first real title challenge since 1990.
The injury problems which have dogged Fernando Torres' second season in England mean that Benitez is keen to augment the squad with a striker with a reputation for goals. Former Kop hero Michael Owen has been linked with a return to the club, as has Wigan's Emile Heskey.
Keane's fellow big-money signing from the summer, Andrea Dossena, could also leave Anfield after just six months at the club.
RUMOUR RATING: One star Robbie Keane's superb strike against Arsenal shows why he remains an integral part of the team. If Liverpool sell, they are unlikely to get anything like the £20million they paid out. Rafael Benitez has shown a ruthless streak when it comes to jettisoning signings that have not worked out but Keane still has a part to play as shown by the point he salvaged at the Emirates. Dossena may be more worried though.
