Liverpool v Everton: Gerrard frustrated, Lescott eyes progress

THE two goalscorers in yesterday’s Merseyside derby had contrasting reactions to the 1-1 draw in the FA Cup fourth round tie at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard was naturally frustrated after seeing Liverpool held to a 1-1 draw. But his Everton counterpart believes his side have every chance of making progress when the two local rivals square for a third time in the fourth round replay at Goodison Park a week on Wednesday

The Liverpool captain felt his side had done enough to win the game at Anfield and was disappointed they didn’t turn their second-half dominance into a winning goal.

Liverpool fell behind to Lescott’s first-half header for Everton before Gerrard lashed home an equaliser early in the second half.

The hosts went on to dominate the rest of the match but could not find a winner as Everton held out for a replay, which will take place at Goodison Park a week on Wednesday.

“For 90 minutes we completely dominated the game, but they’ve scored off a set-piece and it’s frustrating because we’ve worked on that,” Gerrard said

“It’ll be a tough game (at Goodison Park) but we’ve done it before so we can go there and win.

“If you look at the chances over the 90 minutes it’s disappointing not to win today. What we’ll look at today is set-pieces and getting a winning goal.”

Gerrard was in court last Friday over allegations connected to a nightclub brawl, but he did not look like a player feeling the weight of off-field problems as he spearheaded the Liverpool comeback.

“It’s not about me,” he said.

“You’re obviously happy when you score goals but I’d like to be stood here having not scored but gone through. It’s not about me, it’s about the team.”

He then added: “I’m happy with my performances. I’m a footballer, I’m focused on my football and will continue to show that.”

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was full of praise for his captain.
