Yossi Benayoun is refusing to give up hope - Liverpool FC latest

Yossi Benayoun is mobbed after his winner at Fulham

DEFIANT Yossi Benayoun insists Liverpool are refusing to give up on their title dream despite admitting it will be “very difficult” after Tuesday’s damaging 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

Benayoun netted the injury-time equaliser that secured the point that temporarily moved Benitez’s side to the top of the Premier League table on goal difference.

Manchester United returned to the summit last night after their 2-0 win against Portsmouth at Old Trafford and still have the luxury of a game in hand.

But Benayoun says Liverpool have no intention of surrendering the championship and are ready to capitalise on any complacency from United.

“It’s very difficult,” said the Israel international. “United are a strong side but we won’t give up and we will continue to try and do our best.

“We will keep trying, look to win our remaining matches, and hopefully we can still do it.”

Liverpool’s second successive 4-4 draw may have enthralled the neutrals but, as against Chelsea in the Champions League, it did little to bolster their hopes of silverware this season.

And Benayoun accepts Benitez’s side should have been out of sight even before Andrey Arshavin netted the first of his four-goal haul to put Arsenal ahead before the break.

“It was great game for the supporters to watch but not for us because we made too many mistakes,” said the in-form midfielder. “We should have won the game.

“In the first half we created four or five really good chances but then they scored with their only shot of the half.

“We came back strong in the second-half and led 2-1. At that point we were controlling the game but we made more mistakes and then when we had

to chase it they punished us.”

Meanwhile, Kenny Dalglish has admitted he would relish a return to working for Liverpool after it emerged Rafael Benitez was keen to find a role for the Anfield legend within the club’s hierarchy.

“All I can say at the moment is if I can help Liverpool Football Club in any way, shape or form, then I’m in,” said Dalglish. “If the manager or the people running the club think there’s a role for me then I’ll fill it happily.

“Similarly, if the club think the best thing for the club is for me to stay out of the way then I’m not going to take offence at that either.”

While Dalglish is poised to arrive, it is believed reserve team manager Gary Ablett could leave the club at the end of the season. After winning the national title last year, Liverpool’s second-string have struggled this term and are currently bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League Northern Section.

Liverpool have confirmed they will play two games in south-east Asia this summer as part of their pre-season preparations.

Benitez’s men will face the Thailand national team in Bangkok on July 22 before flying to Singapore to take on the national team on July 26.

LIVERPOOL youth team will face Arsenal in the final of the FA Youth Cup if they get past Birmingham at Anfield tomorrow night (kick-off 7.45pm).

Arsenal beat Manchester City 4-1 at the Emirates last night to complete a 6-2 aggregate success.

Liverpool hold a 3-0 lead from their first leg.
