Chelsea to battle Reds for England star

It has been reported today that Chelsea have decided to join the race for their old right-back, Glen Johnson, from Portsmouth. He has improved drastically since leaving Stamford Bridge and won all the Portsmouth Player-of-the-Year awards this season.

He has also fought his way into the England team, and the Daily Mail says that it was Fabio Capello who advised Carlo Ancelotti to buy him. Portsmouth are short of cash and need to sell some stars to balance the books, and Johnson is expected to be their top moneyspinner.

A Portsmouth source in the Mail said yesterday about Johnson: ‘He has behaved in a mature manner, as well as improving as a player with regular first-team football. Roman always liked him because of his attacking dare as a full back. Jose did not always agree, but Mourinho’s not at the club any more, is he?”

Liverpool have been strongly linked with Johnson, but with the news that Bayern Munich have made an offer for Jose Bosingwa, it seems that Chelsea have decided to step in with a £17m cash offer
