Andy Burnham says he will keep fighting for release of secret Hillsborough files

Following the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough, the then home secretary Jacqui Smith called for all files on the tragedy to be released.

South Yorkshire Police, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have all agreed to release their documents into the public domain.

On Saturday, June 20, there will be a mass march to Parliament to demand justice for the 96 who died at Hillsborough.

More than 25,000 signatures have been gathered on a petition to be handed in to Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Around 10,000 people are expected to join the march, which will lead campaigners through the streets of London.

Fans from clubs across the country have promised to join Liverpool FC fans calling for someone to be held accountable for the tragedy.

During Liverpool’s successful year as Capital of Culture, Mr Burnham was a key figure in promoting the city.

He added: “It is a huge wrench to leave because I feel the year we had in Liverpool last year was right up there among my proudest.

“Working with Phil Redmond was a real privilege. Health is the job I always wanted in politics. I worked for the NHS in the past and it is my political passion.”
