Liverpool FC striker Fernando Torres: I came to win trophies not break records

Fernando Torres puts Liverpool in front against Chelsea

FERNANDO TORRES has picked up countless individual plaudits since he arrived at Anfield two years ago.

The Spaniard with the midas touch has established himself as a cult hero courtesy of his remarkable haul of 50 goals in 84 appearances.

Records have fallen almost as quickly as he leaves defenders trailing.

He became the first Liverpool player since Jackie Balmer in 1946 to score successive hat-tricks in home matches.

Torres was also the first Liverpool striker to score 20 league goals in a campaign since Robbie Fowler was in his prime 12 years earlier.

Roger Hunt’s long-standing club record of netting in eight straight home league games was equalled and before his first season in England was out Torres had knocked Ruud van Nistelrooy off his perch as the most prolific foreign player ever in their debut Premier League campaign.

His header against Spurs back in May saw him reach his half century for the club and he would have had many more had hamstring problems not hampered him last season.

But for all the personal glory and affection in which he’s held by the fans, there is something sadly missing. Torres left his homeland because he wanted to get his hands on silverware and he has failed to achieve it on Merseyside so far.

Speaking just after the team’s arrival in Singapore yesterday, he admitted that’s something he’s determined to put right this season.

And having gone so close last term Torres believes Liverpool are capable of making the step up from challengers to champions.

“I’m not thinking about personal targets for next season, the most important thing for me is to win trophies,” he said.

“That is why I came to Liverpool.

“Two years without a trophy is a long time for Liverpool so maybe this season is even more important than the years before. It is a really big season for the club.

“I am sure that this year we can win the Premier League or the Champions League – a big trophy like that.

“It won't be easy because there are big challenges ahead but we think we can win.

“We have a fantastic squad and I know we can play better than last season.

“Next summer we have the World Cup so it’s a massive year for so many of us.”

Liverpool have failed to win any of their opening three friendlies and arrived in Singapore after a 1-1 draw with minnows Thailand.

However, Torres insists nobody should be making any sweeping judgements.
