Liverpool FC striker Fernando Torres: I came to win trophies not break records

Fernando Torres puts Liverpool in front against Chelsea

“In pre-season results aren’t the important thing,” he said.

“We must just try to improve.

“For us Spanish internationals and Andrea Dossena we have been back training for just three days.

“We are on a training programme which is preparing us for the whole season , not just pre-season.

“We must just ensure we are 100% ready for the start of the league.”

Torres, who became a dad for the first time earlier this month, has proved the star attraction on this tour. As he warmed up on the touchline during the match against Thailand every stretch earned an ovation.

And when he finally got on for the final 10 minutes he didn’t disappoint with a scintillating cameo display which almost brought a late winner.

One female Indonesian journalist went weak at the knees when she got the chance to ask him a question at yesterday’s press conference.

“Fernando, I am one of your biggest fans and I believe we have the same taste in rock music,” she started.

It turned out she was referring to his appearance a few years ago in the video for a song by Spanish group El Canto del Loco, whose singer Dani Martin is a good friend of the Liverpool star.

Despite looking slightly bemused, ever polite Torres was happy to discuss it before bringing the conversation back to the pre-season build up.

“Yes, I like to listen to rock music and I enjoyed doing the video but that’s part of my past and now I am just thinking about football,” he said. “I am a professional and I’m focused on trying to get better every day.

“I want to be remembered for what I achieve as a footballer.

“It is really nice to be here and be able to meet fans in Singapore.

“I’m very grateful for their support and it is very special to me to be in the hearts of so many supporters.”

Meanwhile, Yossi Benayoun is set to play in Sunday’s clash at the Singapore National Stadium after missing the match against the Thais with an ankle injury.

The Israeli is on a mission to carry on the fine form he showed towards the end of last season.

“This is my first time in Singapore and I’m really happy to be here,” he said. “It’s a lovely place and I’m sure we will enjoy our stay. We’ve come here to train, work hard and get ready for the game.

“Hopefully we will be better on Sunday but the main thing while we are out here is to get fit. In these first games the results don’t matter.

“I have a lot of confidence in this team, especially after how close we came last season.

“We have the belief that we can win the league.”
