But the understandable uncertainty of an untried backline contributed to Atletico’s second goal on 33 minutes, when ex-Manchester United striker Diego Forlan silenced the baying Kop with an exquisite curling effort into the top corner from 20 yards.
A second-half charge from Liverpool at least gave the subdued home crowd something to cheer when, nine minutes from time, Lucas capitalised on a faulty offside trap to fire home Steven Gerrard’s pinpoint through-ball.
The form of Lucas has been an encouraging positive throughout pre-season, and he once again impressed playing in a more advanced role ahead of the sitting Javier Mascherano.
And with the incoming Aquilani out of action for up to the next two months, the Brazilian is acutely aware opportunity is now knocking to convince Benitez he can blossom into a first-team regular.
However, Liverpool’s creativity from midfield improved noticeably once Gerrard dropped into a deeper role during the final quarter. And it may be that, until Aquilani finds his feet and fitness, the skipper could at times revert to his former role.
Fernando Torres, making his first appearance against Atletico since departing for Anfield two years ago, had the best of Liverpool’s other chances but it seemed at times he couldn’t bring himself to score against his former club.
He was twice denied by good saves from visiting goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo, struck the post and should have had a penalty when felled by Paulo Assuncao.
But despite failing to find the target, Torres appeared sharp and alert, ably supported by the busy Yossi Benayoun, who is carrying on where he left off at the end of last season.
While Forlan attracted the jeers, there were cheers for the returning Florent Sinama-Pongolle when the striker emerged as a second-half substitute. The Frenchman may have only played a bit-part at Anfield, but his efforts en route to Istanbul remain warmly appreciated.
So a largely under-whelming pre-season ended in a third defeat in seven games for Benitez’s side. He, like his team’s supporters, must hope Liverpool are reserving their best for when the real stuff begins in six days’ time.
