UNHAPPY Ryan Babel has accused Rafael Benitez of breaking promises – and has urged the Liverpool manager to let him leave in January.
Babel wants a loan move back to Ajax after again finding himself on the sidelines during the opening weeks of the campaign.
The Holland international started Liverpool’s first game at Tottenham Hotspur but, following a poor performance, has subsequently made only a late appearance from the bench in the defeat to Aston Villa 10 days ago.
It was the latest false dawn for Babel, who has underwhelmed massively since his £11.5million arrival from Ajax two years ago, making just 43 starts for the club, with his main role being as an impact substitute in 50 other games.
Babel suggests he has been singled out as a scapegoat for the opening-day defeat at White Hart Lane.
And the winger believes a temporary return to Holland in the New Year could bolster his chances of a place in his country’s squad for next summer’s World Cup.
“There have been a lot of things promised, but they haven’t been followed up,” said Babel. “I would get to play for more minutes and have more chances, but after the first defeat, I only lost my place.
“I think half a season at Ajax with a view to the World Cup wouldn’t be a bad idea. I can add something to the Ajax squad.
“Loaning me out was not an option (in the summer). Now we have agreed to review the situation in January.
“I see the current situation as a signal that I really have to get playing.”
