Daniel Agger makes his comeback as Liverpool FC Reserves secure victory at Manchester City

WHILE the first team were losing 2-0 in Florence, Daniel Agger made a successful comeback to help Liverpool Reserves beat Manchester City by the same scoreline at the City of Manchester Stadium last night.

The Danish centre-back played for 68 minutes and put in an impressive performance as John McMahon’s side secured all three points in the FA Barclays Premier Reserve League Northern Section with goals from David Ngog and Steve Irwin.

Ngog, who hit the winner for Rafael Benitez’s side in the Carling Cup against Leeds last midweek, was in scoring form again with a glancing header in the seventh minute. While midfielder Irwin celebrated his 20th birthday with a fine second.

The victory and Agger’s return provided plenty of positives, but there was also negatives too.

Victor Palsson was sent-off for two bookable offences, while Swiss international full-back Philipp Degen played just 45 minutes before having to be replaced after feeling ill.

Reserves coach McMahon said: “It was a good win for us and Daniel did really well and it was great to see him back.

“He was committed, he made some good challenges and he helped the young lads around him. He enjoyed himself and was pleased to be back.

“David scored again which is another plus for us and Stevie’s finish was excellent.

“We could have scored a lot more goals in the end and David Amoo and Alex Kacaniklic had good chances. It was also great to see Zsolt Poloskei make his debut. He has been out injured for 15 months but it was great to see him on the pitch and he has worked so hard.”

LIVERPOOL RESERVES: Martin, Degen (Mavinga 45), Darby, Ayala, Agger (Mendy 68), Irwin, Eccleston, Amoo (Poloskei 78), Ngog, Palsson, Kacaniklic. Subs: Hansen, Saric.
