Carragher insisted Liverpool’s title hopes are not over but he admits there is now little margin for error.
“There is a long way to go yet but if we continue losing games it will be the end,” he said.
“We have given ourselves a mountain to climb but we can’t think about the title right now to be honest.
“We have to forget about that and concentrate on the next league game which is Manchester United.
“That will give us the chance to claw some points back that will help us get a lot closer. Right now we have to restore our confidence and play much better.”
Benitez is hopeful that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will both be fit enough to return to action against Lyon tomorrow.
The star duo have been named among the 30 nominees for this year’s Ballon d’Or. The winner is set to be announced on December 1.
