ACADEMY FOOTBALL: Substitute David Ngoo hits late double as Liverpool FC under-18s beat leaders Blackburn

LIVERPOOL under-18s scored an excellent 3-0 victory to end Group C leaders Blackburn Rovers’ unbeaten start to the FA Premier Academy League season at Brockhall on Saturday.

Two late goals from substitute David Ngoo added to a penalty from James Ellison saw Rodolfo Borrell’s side bounce back from the 1-0 home defeat to Bolton the previous week.

After a mixed opening to the campaign Liverpool were in fine form and dented Gary Bowyer’s North West section leaders.

There was little action in the early part of the match with both sides feeling their way into the game. But Liverpool had to thank goalkeeper Chris Oldfield on 15 minutes when he blocked superbly from Josh Morris, who had been played through by Tom Hitchcock.

Oldfield was in fine form as he also clawed away a Jason Banton lob, which was heading for the top corner.

But after that Liverpool dominated and took the lead on 23 minutes. Ellison was brought down by Rovers’ keeper Josh Swann and the Liverpool-born forward, who celebrates his 18th birthday this Sunday, made no mistake from the resulting penalty.

Ellison had another effort cleared off the line, as Liverpool continued to press forward for a second goal.

In the second half Tom Ince misjudged a header when well placed, while Oldfield saved another effort from Banton.

Although the visitors were in charge of things it wasn’t until the final minutes to go that they doubled their advantage.
