LIVERPOOL RESERVES made it through to the quarter-finals of the Lancashire Senior Cup with a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over holders Manchester United
Nathan Eccleston, who made his senior debut at Arsenal in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, followed up by giving Liverpool the lead in the first half at Altrincham’s Moss Lane ground last night.
But United substitute Zoran Tosic, who also saw some League Cup action this week when he appeared in his club’s win at Barnsley on Tuesday, equalised midway through the second period from a free-kick.
With no extra time in this competition, the game was to be decided on penalties, which gave goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis the chance to be the Liverpool hero as he made two saves in the shootout from Matthew James and Ritchie De Laet.
UNITED RESERVES: Zieler, Brown (Macheda 65), Dudgeon, Evans, Gill, De Laet, Stewart, Hewson (Tosic 58), King, Norwood (James 58), Brandy.
LIVERPOOL RESERVES: Bouzanis, Darby, Threlfall, Ayala, Mavinga, Irwin, Eccleston, Amoo, Saric (Mendy 81), Palsson (Weijl 65), Kacaniklic. Subs: Hansen, Kohlert, Brouwer.
