Liverpool FC latest: Fernando Torres closing in on comeback at Blackburn Rovers

FERNANDO TORRES has handed Liverpool a major fitness boost by returning to full training – and is now in line for a comeback at Blackburn Rovers tomorrow.

The Spain international has been undergoing a three-week course of intensive treatment as he recovers from the groin injury that has hampered his campaign.

And yesterday Torres took part in a second successive full training session at Melwood to raise hopes he could be available for the trip to Ewood Park.

The Blackburn match will be skipper Steven Gerrard’s 500th game for the club, and Liverpool could have their first-choice strikeforce back together for the first time in 10 matches.

Torres has not played since the Champions League clash in Lyon on November 4 after picking up the problem on international duty.

“The position over Torres is very positive and he was feeling good,” said Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez. “We will see how he is in the next training sessions but it seems as though things are going well.

“It will be very close to a fully-fit squad. We have two or three players with knocks but hopefully they are small things.

“It is always very positive but there is a big difference in players being available and being ready.

“When they are coming back from injuries, you have to be careful, but at least we will have options we didn’t have before.”

Gerrard will become only the 13th player in Liverpool’s history to reach the 500-game milestone, having made his debut against Blackburn back in November 1998.
