Glen Johnson to miss at least a month after knee ligament injury: Liverpool FC latest

LIVERPOOL have confirmed defender Glen Johnson has suffered medial ligament damage in his right knee.

The summer signing from Portsmouth limped off after 88 minutes of Rafael Benitez side’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

After undertaking a scan this afternoon at the club’s training base at Melwood, it has been revealed the England right-back caused ligament damage when attempting a slide tackle of Villa’s Gabriel Agbonlahor.

However, the Anfield outfit are unsure how long the injury will leave Johnson out of action, though the former Chelsea player will certainly miss Saturday’s trip to Championship side Reading in the FA Cup third round and is likely to be on the sidelines for at least a month.

A club spokesman said: “A scan today has revealed a tear in the medial ligament in Glen’s right knee. The player will see a specialist tomorrow, after which we should be able to more accurately determine the length of his rehabilitation period.”

Meanwhile Jamie Carragher has paid a glowing tribute to goal-hero Fernando Torres after his record breaking goal at Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

The Spain international struck deep into injury-time to give Rafael Benitez’s men a second consecutive Premier League win and reignite their hopes of a top four finish.

In firing low past Brad Friedel, Torres became the quickest player in the club’s history to reach 50 league goals, surpassing such illustrious names as Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler.
