Rafael Benitez admits it won't be easy for Liverpool FC to go fourth this year

Benitez adds: "At this moment we have to do the best for the club and sometimes you have to allow some players to leave and other times you have to keep them.

"We have done some business with Voronin and Dossena and now we have to wait for the others.

"We must accept the situation and try to do our best. We are working. It depends on the money and it depends on the players available but there aren’t too many good players in the market now that you could bring here because the majority of them are with top sides or in the Champions League and they want to stay until the end of the season.

"So we have to manage this with our scouting department and our staff and analyse every single situation but you cannot say we have one, two or three targets because it is very difficult."

Liverpool have taken the decision to channel any transfer funds into recruitment during the summer, rather than spend an artificially-inflated fee on a quick-fix this month.

That, however, has left the Anfield outfit open to the accusation they will use any money generated towards servicing the club's debt.

But Benitez reveals he has already started looking at the market for possible arrivals in the close season.

"Always you have to be ready and you have to know the market," he says. "We have some people who are monitoring every player.

"We will try to do something now but we also have to think about the future so again I will say that at this moment for the club we have to do what we have to do. But for the next year we have to keep improving the squad.

"Does this suggest I am not going anywhere? Yes, I have to plan for the summer. When I decided to stay it was because I wanted to stay. I gave my word and I want to fight so I will fight until the end."
