Daniel Agger: Liverpool FC hard work has only just begun

After a season that promised so much through a second place finish to eventual league champions Manchester United, Agger is at pains to put his finger on what has gone wrong this time around.

“If I had the answers to why we haven’t been as successful as last season it would be easy,” he says.

“Injuries haven’t helped. But there are a lot of good players in this squad. If someone is out we should be able to cope.

“We have conceded more goals, but you can’t just say the defence has played badly. It’s not that simple.

“In other years when we’ve done well it wasn’t just the defence keeping clean sheets, it was the whole team.

“Also, if you look at previous years nobody ever mentioned zonal-marking because we were winning. It is not a reason for us not winning.”

Agger has missed a large part of the campaign through inury and hasn’t played since picking up a knock in the 2-1 loss to Reading.

Sotirios Kyrgiakos has deputised well in his absence and the Greek defender was among the man-of-the-match contenders against Wolves.

Frustrating as it was for Agger and his teammates, that draw extended Liverpool’s unbeaten run in the league to five games since the Fratton Park debacle.

The Anfield outfit have also kept four clean sheets in that spell; a sequence they will be looking to extend when Bolton visit Anfield on Saturday.

“There is no point looking too far ahead,” adds Agger.

“All we have to do is concentrate on the next game.

“But we haven’t been good enough and we all know that.

“I don’t think any of us here will ever hide from that or say it isn’t true.

“What we are doing is giving our best to improve our position. We want to get back on the right track as soon as possible.”

With Agger still doubtful for the weekend, Kyrgiakos is likely to continue alongside Martin Skrtel at the heart of the defence, while Jamie Carragher will carry on at right-back due to Glen Johnson’s prolonged spell on the sidelines.
