AS we await the first Merseyside derby of the new decade, Evertonians will be hoping for a little more luck over their city neighbours than the previous 10 years.
Dec 28, 2005: Everton 1-3 Liverpool- Scorers: Beattie (Eve) Crouch, Gerrard & Cissé (Liv) Sent off: Arteta & Neville (Eve)

While Everton could do little to prevent Liverpool extending a winning run to nine games, the Blues at least became the first team to breach Pepe Reina’s goal in two months. Referee Graham Poll left his mark on another derby when he sent off both Phil Neville and Mikel Arteta.
Mar 20, 2005: Liverpool 2-1 Everton- Scorers: Gerrard & Luis Garcia (Liv) Cahill (Eve) Sent off: Baros (Liv)
A bruising encounter saw Benitez forced into making all three of his substitutions before half-time. But it was only after Milan Baros’ 77th minute sending off for a late challenge on Alan Stubbs that Everton pulled one back through Tim Cahill.
Dec 11, 2004: Everton 1-0 Liverpool-Scorers: Carsley

Rafa Benitez rang the changes for his first Merseyside derby – the 200th between the clubs - coming just days after the energy-sapping Champions League win over Olympiakos. Still, there can be no half measures in these affairs and the Reds were found wanting. Lee Carsley’s second half goal settled it.
Jan 31, 2004: Liverpool 0-0 Everton
How it remained goalless was a mystery. Both goalkeepers stayed busy but it was Everton’s Nigel Martyn who truly excelled. The 37-year-old pulled off a couple of fantastic saves to deny Steven Gerrard and Dietmar Hamann.
Aug 30, 2003: Everton 0-3 Liverpool- Scorers: Owen(2) & Kewell (Liverpool)
Harry Kewell’s first Liverpool goal sealed the Reds’ biggest derby win since 1986. Had Wayne Rooney not been thwarted by Jerzy Dudek immediately after both of Michael Owen’s goals, things could have been very different.
Apr 19, 2003: Everton 1-2 Liverpool- Scorers: Unsworth (Eve) Owen & Murphy (Liv) Sent off: Weir & Naysmith (Eve)
The fight for Champions League qualification became the battle of Goodison Park when both David Weir and Gary Naysmith were given their marching orders, helping Liverpool leapfrog the Toffees into fifth place.
Dec 22, 2002: Liverpool 0-0 Everton
Referee Graham Poll was the only person inside Anfield to miss Steven Gerrard’s horror tackle on Gary Naysmith. Despite the Liverpool player’s apology he was handed a three-match ban when the FA looked at the incident again.
Feb 23, 2002: Liverpool 1-1 Everton- Scorers: Anelka (Liv) Radzinski (Eve)
It’s a cliche but form went out of the window for this derby. With Everton fighting relegation, and Liverpool chasing league leaders Manchester United, it took loan signing Nicolas Anelka’s first goal for the Reds to cancel out Tomasz Radzinksi’s opener.
Sep 15, 2001: Everton 1-3 Liverpool- Scorers: Campbell (Eve) Gerrard, Owen, Riise (Liv)
This turned out to be a stroll at Goodison Park for Liverpool when Walter Smith’s team failed to turn up. Steven Gerrard announced his arrival with a stirring man-of-the-match performance marked by a stunning goal.
Apr 16, 2001: Everton 2-3 Liverpool- Scorers: Ferguson & Unsworth (Eve) Heskey, Babel & McAllister (Liv) Sent off: Biscan (Liv)

Gary McAllister’s late, late winner was credited as the catalyst for Liverpool’s incredible treble winning campaign. McAllister’s audacious 44-yard freekick guaranteed him hero status on the Kop while handing Liverpool a first win at Goodison since 1990.
Oct 29 2001: Liverpool 3-1 Everton- Scorers: Barmby, Heskey & Berger (Liv) Campbell (Eve) Sent off: Gravesen (Eve)
Nick Barmby required a police escort after scoring against his former employers for their fierce rivals whom he had joined a few months earlier. It was bound to happen wasn’t it?
Apr 21 2000: Liverpool 0-0 Everton.
Controversy reigned when referee Graham Poll disallowed Don Hutchison’s goal in time added on.
“A minimum of two minutes time” had been added on, but only 90 seconds had elapsed when Reds keeper Sander Westerveld somehow struck the ball off Hutchison’s back and into his own net!
Referee Poll naively thought he would avoid controversy by blowing for time!
In a curious twist Westerveld would later play for Everton, while Hutchison had previously played for the Reds.
