Mark Lawrenson: Steven Gerrard was prime candidate, but Rio Ferdinand is best choice for captain

STEVEN GERRARD was obviously a prime contender for the England captaincy.

But Rio Ferdinand is the correct choice.

Gerrard – like Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney – just doesn’t need the extra responsibility.

Those players would of course have accepted it if Fabio Capello had offered it to them, but they need to play with freedom and make sure their own games are right.

Ferdinand will do a decent job if he is fit and I prefer my captains to be centre-backs anyway.

They are facing the play and get a better overview because they can see more than anyone else.

John Terry will continue to be a natural leader on the pitch anyway, and his form for Chelsea in the last few games suggests that what has been going on in his personal life has had no affect on him as a footballer.

Capello has made his position stronger by dealing with Terry decisively and almost bagging himself a bonus skipper into the bargain.
