Returning Liverpool FC striker Fernando Torres can prove key in race for Champions League place

The desperate draw has dropped Liverpool to sixth place, a point behind both fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and City and ahead of Aston Villa on goal difference.

City, along with Villa, have a game in hand, but appear to have more difficult fixtures in the remainder of the season.

However, manager Roberto Mancini was encouraged by his team’s display yesterday.

“I wasn’t frustrated with our performance,” said the Italian. “We played against a top team and for me we played well.

“We played as a team. We didn’t give Liverpool any chances. We wanted to win but we couldn’t find a finish. But we managed to keep a clean sheet.

“It was a very hard game and there were some hard tackles. But this is English football. For me, there were too many fouls.

“At the end, a draw is a right result. We didn’t concede any chances to them and they didn’t concede any chances to us.”
