Albert Riera facing uncertain Liverpool FC future as Pepe Reina agrees new deal

The goalkeeper is expected to put pen to paper later this week after returning to Merseyside following Spain’s friendly with France.

Liverpool have already tied Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt to long-term contracts during the past 12 months and will now turn their attentions to Javier Mascherano, whose current deal expires in 2012.

But the Argentina captain will be offered a two-year extension with improved terms in an attempt to stave off expected summer interest from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Martin Skrtel will be sidelined for at least the next two months by the broken metatarsal he suffered in the Europa League victory at Unirea Urziceni last week.

Although the centre-back does not require an operation, Skrtel is now facing a race against time to be fit to represent Slovakia in this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.
