But the Italian controversially remained on the bench during the wretched goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January, despite playing a starring role in the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur less than a week earlier.
Concerns over the state of Wigan’s playing surface have led it to being relaid after their home defeat to Tottenham a fortnight ago.
But Benitez says only the standard of the opposition and not the pitch will determine Aquilani’s selection.
“When I didn’t play him at Wolves it wasn’t to do with the state of their pitch, it was because of the kind of game and because others were available, which meant we could manage in a different way.
“So whether I play him at Wigan or not isn’t a decision that will be determined by the pitch.”
The player’s agent, Franco Zavaglia, has revealed Aquilani is content with his status in the squad and is eager to prove his worth next season.
“Alberto made a decision of a lifetime. He is fine at Liverpool and next year will be the most important for him.”
With rivals Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa having not been in league action over the weekend, Liverpool can move two points clear in fourth place, albeit having played more games than the other three teams competing for Champions League qualification.
“You’re not talking of just one team, but this season there are maybe four in contention, with us, City, Villa and Tottenham,” said Benitez.
“If it’s just one or two you can make a mistake but when there are others in the race, others who are winning, you have to keep going and I think it will go right to the end, to the final day.”
While Pepe Reina is expected to pen a new contract shortly, Benitez is confident Javier Mascherano will follow suit.
“On Pepe I am 100% certain he will stay with us and I’m really confident Javier will too – both for a long time.”
