Rafa Benitez
RAFAEL BENITEZ does not believe Liverpool’s future should be determined by the strength of one bad season – as he attempts to keep his team’s hopes of silverware alive this evening.
The Anfield outfit entertain French side Lille this evening looking to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit in their Europa League round of 16 tie.
It represents Liverpool’s last chance of winning a trophy after a desperately disappointing campaign in which they have underperformed both domestically and abroad.
Elimination this evening would further increase the pressure on Benitez, with his side facing an almighty scrap to finish in the top four and earn a lucrative return to the Champions League.
But the Spaniard, who signed a five-year deal less than 12 months ago, is convinced that should not be allowed to compromise his long-term vision for the club.
“For me it is time to concentrate on the games we have,” said Benitez. “Everyone has a responsibility and I will try to stay focused. It’s the same for the players because this period is crucial.
“The most important thing, though, is the future of the club – not just one good or bad season, and the best thing we can do is focus on the football.
“My own position is not the issue. It’s not about whether we win or lose over one season, it’s about having the consistency over how we do things.
“My own responsibility is to be focused – and my only ambition at this moment is to beat Lille.
“It’s not a case of ‘oh Rafa’s not guaranteeing his future’, I don’t need to say anything about that. I have a very good vision about the future, but now the responsibility is just the next game. That’s all I can do.”
