LIVERPOOL have been told it is “unrealistic” to expect they can dissuade Javier Mascherano from pressing for a transfer to Inter during the transfer window.
The European champions have been linked with a move for Mascherano ever since former Anfield manager Rafael Benitez succeeded Jose Mourinho as coach at the San Siro.
Benitez has made no secret of his admiration for Mascherano having helped kickstart the Argentine’s faltering career by taking him to Liverpool from West Ham United in January 2007.
The midfielder, who was a major target of Barcelona 12 months ago, has hinted heavily during recent months of seeking a move away from Anfield. But now Diego Milito is convinced his fellow Argentine will be joining him at Inter, not least because Liverpool cannot offer Champions League football.
“We are very excited about Mascherano joining us at Inter,” said striker Milito.
“He has made it clear he wants to be here and it’s just down to the relevant people agreeing the deal now.
“I think it’s unrealistic of Liverpool to think they can keep hold of Mascherano when they can’t even offer Champions League football and are not challenging Manchester United and Chelsea for the Premier League title.”
