Carragher believes Torres will soon follow Gerrard’s lead and reaffirm his commitment to the cause.

“There’s been a lot of negativity and it’s been like that for a while,” Carragher said.

“I’m sure that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres will still be involved at the club next season.

“If they are then the aim for Liverpool must be to get back into the Champions League.”

Carragher says Hodgson is embarking on a “rebuilding process” following the club’s dismal seventh place finish in the Premier League last season. Liverpool aren’t a club like Real Madrid, who can just throw £100million at it if we don’t win the title,” he added.

“For clubs like Real Madrid and Inter Milan, it’s a disaster if they don’t win the league, so they go out and spend big money on new players. Liverpool can’t do that – we have to build.

“Next season, rather than thinking too much about the title, we have to concentrate on getting back into the top four.

“It’s a rebuilding process again and hopefully we can get ourselves right up there.”

Liverpool have confirmed Thursday’s first leg against FK Rabotnicki will kick-off at 7.45pm UK time.

Meanwhile, Albert Riera has paid tribute to Liverpool supporters following his move to Olympiakos.

He said: “I would like to thank the fans for their support, you're unbelievable.

“I want the fans to remember me as a player who tried to give his best.

“I felt it was time for a change.”
