Liverpool FC defender Danny Wilson happy with first team involvement

DANNY WILSON has been encouraged by his involvement in the Liverpool first-team squad as he refuted suggestions his progress could be stifled by his move to Anfield.

The 18-year-old was on the bench when Liverpool progressed to the Europa League play-offs with victory over Rabotnicki and played 45 minutes of a 1-0 friendly defeat against Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Wilson made 24 appearances for Rangers last season but he believes the end of Andy Webster’s loan spell at Dundee United and the return to fitness of Madjid Bougherra would have given him an equally tough challenge for first-team football at Ibrox.

Wilson said: “I’ve been on the bench for the Europa League game last week, and that’s the only competitive game I could have been involved in.

“Then I played 45 minutes in the friendly so I was happy with that.

“People say I’m maybe not going to get the game-time I would have at Rangers. But I would have faced the same problem there.”

Wilson feels he has already learned from fellow centre-back Jamie Carragher.

“Davie Weir was a massive influence on me at Rangers,” said the teenager, who made his Scotland Under-21 debut in a 1-1 friendly draw against Sweden this week. “I feel, watching Carragher, I can learn a lot from him.”
