Ibrahimovic could be set for a San Siro return with neighbours Milan heading the queue for his signature but so far the Italians have only asked to take him on loan rather than a permanent switch.
Mascherano was present at Liverpool’s Melwood training ground yesterday but Hodgson will not play him again before the transfer window shuts.
Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola would not discuss the player when asked about a potential transfer.
He said: “I will speak about him when he’s here – if he comes.
“If a defensive midfielder arrives the needs of the team will be resolved. If one arrives I will be satisfied.”
When asked whether a deal was close Guardiola added: “You’ll have to ask (sporting director Andoni) Zubizarreta.”
