Roy Hodgson: Why Liverpool FC's Dirk Kuyt can’t sign for Rafael Benitez at Inter

ROY HODGSON yesterday accused Dirk Kuyt’s agent of ignoring an agreement that predecessor Rafael Benitez would not to try to sign any Liverpool players.

Hodgson has claimed Benitez has a written assurance not to raid his former club after taking over at Inter earlier this summer.

And the Anfield manager is unhappy that Kuyt’s representative, Rob Jansen, has intimated holding talks with the San Siro outfit over a £13million move for the Dutchman.

Although Benitez is keen to be reunited with Kuyt, who he brought to Liverpool from Feyenoord in 2006, Hodgson was last week promised by Inter president Massimo Moratti that the Italians, having also targeted Javier Mascherano, would not take any players from Anfield this transfer window.

However, Kuyt’s agent Jansen yesterday suggested talks were ongoing between the clubs with his client open to a move to Italy.

Hodgson, though, was left unhappy with the revelation and pointed an accusing finger while reiterating he has no intention of allowing Kuyt to leave before next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

“We have not received an offer and Dirk hasn’t told me he’d want to leave if an offer comes in,” said the Liverpool manager.

“When Benitez left the club he signed an agreement that he would not poach players from Liverpool and I think that still applies.

“And as far as I’m concerned, the agreement with Moratti still stands.

“But this is obviously something going on behind the scenes with the agent talking to possibly the manager of Inter.

“Two things: one, we don’t welcome an offer and two, we haven’t received an offer. At this very late stage in the transfer window it would be remarkably unusual for us to accept an offer for a player we don’t want to leave for money we don’t need. I need the player, not the money.”
