Roy Hodgson: Why Liverpool FC's Dirk Kuyt can’t sign for Rafael Benitez at Inter

Jansen said earlier in the day: “The two clubs continue to talk and things are moving slowly.

“Dirk has told Liverpool he no longer wants to be involved as this is something that regards his career and life.

“It doesn’t mean he wants to leave at all costs but when a club like Inter comes along it’s normal to look into the situation further.”

While Kuyt was part of the squad that travelled to Turkey yesterday ahead of tonight’s Europa League qualifying play-off second leg at Trabzonspor, Javier Mascherano was omitted as he seeks a move to Barcelona.

The Catalans remain some way off Liverpool’s valuation of the player, which Hodgson was not willing to compromise by ruling the Argentine ineligible from European competition with an appearance tonight.

“Javier’s not here because the negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs,” said the Liverpool manager. “I wouldn’t say he has played his last game for the club. But if he played here it might prejudice the transfer and I don’t wish to do anything like that.”

Hodgson remains hopeful of further bolstering his squad with talks ongoing with Fulham over left-back Paul Konchesky.

Alberto Aquilani’s season-long loan to Juventus went through yesterday. And it has emerged the Italians have an option to buy the midfielder next year for a fee of £13m.

Krisztian Nemeth has finalised his move to Olympiakos yesterday.
