THE Europa League may not be the priority for Roy Hodgson, but the Liverpool manager will be hopeful his team's Turkish delight can influence more domestic matters tomorrow.
They may have left it late, but the understrength Anfield outfit averted a humiliating exit against Trabzonspor on Thursday night just when it seemed a difficult start to life in the hotseat was about to take a further turn for the worse for Hodgson.
Instead, the 2-1 victory ensured passage to the group stages of the Europa League, with Liverpool yesterday handed another tricky challenge having been drawn in Group K alongside Italian side Napoli, Celtic's Dutch conquerors Utretcht and former European Cup winners Steaua Bucharest.
And it was a much-needed response following the 3-0 thumping at Manchester City three days earlier, a sobering result after a summer of encouragement since Hodgson's arrival.
Matters are expected to be somewhat less taxing tomorrow afternoon when promoted West Bromwich Albion visit, with Liverpool seeking their first Premier League win of the campaign.
Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Milan Jovanovic should all return to the fray although concerns over Daniel Agger's recovery from concussion mean the Dane could miss out.
And Hodgson believes the success in their absence in midweek can provide encouragement for the entire squad.
“It was vital to win for the psychological feeling coming into the West Brom game,” says the Liverpool manager. “It will be nice to be at home again and hopefully get the other players back into the fray as well.
