Liverpool FC youngsters take chance to get off the mark

GOALS from Stephen Sama, Krisztian Adorjan and substitute Tom Walsh gave Liverpool under-18s their first victory of the new FA Premier Academy League season as they beat Bristol City 3-0 at the Kirkby Academy on Saturday.

Rodolfo Borrell rued numerous missed chances as his side settled for an opening day draw with Aston Villa. But on Saturday they continued their excellent form to take all three points.

Liverpool started brightly and captain Conor Coady almost opened the scoring on four minutes but his header was deflected wide.

Despite Liverpool’s pressure Bristol’s Scott Wilson miscued from six yards and on 19 minutes Liverpool made the visitors pay. After keeper Lewis Carey made a hash of Adorjan’s corner Sama was left to head into an empty net.

Bristol began the second half well with Bobby Medjedoub going close and Tom Andrews firing over a free-kick.

But any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Liverpool’s Hungarian forward Adorjan fired in the second goal from the edge of the box.

Silva went close after good work from Adorjan and Craig Roddan and Liverpool went in search of a third goal. They finally grabbed it when Walsh scored superbly with 10 minutes left.

Borrell said: “We played well and deserved to win. It is always important to win and to win the first game at home of the season.

“I can’t say I am very, very happy, but I am quite happy. There are things we need to work on but overall it was a good win.”

Liverpool will look to continue their solid start to the season when they travel to Sunderland this Saturday (kick-off 11am).
