Paul Konchesky
ROY HODGSON yesterday failed in his attempts to bolster Liverpool’s forward line before the transfer window slammed shut.
The Anfield outfit were in discussions with four different clubs about signing a striker but were unable to finalise any deals.
Instead, confirmation of Paul Konchesky’s signing from Fulham was the only significant incoming as a number of fringe players exited the club.
The 29-year-old left-back has penned a four-year contract at Anfield in a £3.5million deal that has seen youngsters Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic move in the opposite direction.
Konchesky will replace Emiliano Insua who, after moves to Fiorentina and Genoa both hit the buffers last month, has signed for Turkish side Galatasaray on loan with a view to a permanent transfer.
However, the news that Hodgson has been unable to provide further backup to Fernando Torres will be greeted with disappointment by supporters.
Interest in PSV Eindhoven striker Ola Toivonen waned over the weekend when Hodgson declared the player did not possess the “profile” Liverpool were seeking.
The Anfield outfit remained keen on bringing in German international Mario Gomez on a year-long loan, despite Bayern Munich having stated they would not contemplate any temporary deal for the player.
Hodgson also made enquiries about West Ham United striker Carlton Cole, with Hammers manager Avram Grant confirming Ryan Babel had been mentioned as a makeweight.
“I think Liverpool were interested (in Cole) at the last moment, they tried to do something,” said Grant. “I don’t think it was an offer. (Babel) was one of the suggestions to do or not to do.”
