Jamie Carragher _300
JAMIE CARRAGHER hopes to put pen to paper on a new Liverpool contract within a fortnight – then push himself to within touching distance of legendary Liverpool long-player Ian Callaghan.
The club appearance record of 857 set by Callaghan between 1960 and 1978 is unlikely to ever be matched in the modern era.
But Carragher hopes to extend his playing career at Anfield by another three years at least, a period which should see him overtake Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, Ian Rush and Phil Neal – the only players above him in the long-playing record books – with Tommy Smith’s 638 appearance mark set to be eclipsed in the eagerly anticipated visit to Old Trafford in a fortnight.
“I have spoken to the managing director, Christian Purslow, and we’ve had a good chat about the new contract. I’m sure it will happen,” said Carragher – who will enjoy a well earned testimonial at Anfield tomorrow (kick-off 2pm) with all of the proceeds going to charity and good causes.
“The most important thing was for the club to get the ins and outs sorted before the transfer deadline. That’s done now so I’m sure we will have something sorted out in the next week or two.”
Carragher, however, has refused to lower his expectations at Anfield, despite the summer of change the club has undergone.
Roy Hodgson’s managerial reign is still only three league games old, with several players already having come and gone – but the vice-captain refuses to allow the shifting sands to be used an excuse for a season of under-achievement.
