Jamie Carragher 300
It made me think about how he has been a little bit unlucky to have played in an era when Liverpool haven’t enjoyed the greatest of success.
A Scouser with his spirit would have graced any of the past sides and I’m sure if he ends his career without a league title medal it will leave a gaping hole in his cabinet.
But the biggest honour Carragher will retire with is his status as being synonymous with such a great club. He gets the whole history, heritage and honour of representing Liverpool.
He has tried to instil it into others and is the closest the current era has to someone who keeps the boot room legacy going.
He will forever be appreciated for that – and Saturday proved it.
Looking ahead, Carragher and his teammate return to ‘real’ action on Sunday at Birmingham.
Liverpool have already faced arsenal and Manchester City this season – but I think the trip to St Andrews will be the biggest indicator yet as to where the team could be going under Roy Hodgson.
Will he play it tight or will he have enough faith in his defence to set up in a more attacking style and go for he three points?
Hodgson will set down a marker for how Liverpool will play away from home this season, and as they have found out in the past few years, form on the road can make or break a club’s ambitions.
It will be very intriguing.
