Captain Steven Gerrard says Liverpool FC can mix it with the best

STEVEN GERRARD believes Liverpool have shown they can be a match for most teams in the Barclays Premier League despite their agonising defeat to Manchester United yesterday.

A double strike from Gerrard wiped out a two-goal deficit in the second half but couldn’t prevent Roy Hodgson’s side being beaten 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Dimitar Berbatov netted a hat-trick – the first United player to do so in this fixture since 1946 – to leave Liverpool down in 16th place in the embryonic standings.

With five points from as many games, it is the Anfield outfit’s worst start to a Premier League campaign in 18 years.

But skipper Gerrard has called for calm and is convinced Liverpool’s performance, particularly in the second half, augurs well for the future.

“Of course it’s going to take time before the new manager gets his feet in the door and gets his ideas over,” said the England international.
