Liverpool FC latest: I don’t want to be long-ball merchant, says Daniel Agger

Daniel Agger

DANIEL AGGER has questioned the tactical approach of new manager Roy Hodgson – but is determined to fight for his Liverpool starting place.

Agger has been dropped to the bench for the most recent Premier League games at Birmingham City and Manchester United.

The Denmark international started the season as a makeshift left-back but has lost his place following the arrival of Paul Konchesky, with Hodgson preferring the centre-back partnership of Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel.

And Agger has raised doubts over his Anfield future by admitting he will not fully compromise his own playing style to regain his first-team position.

“The manager has a philosophy that we’re playing football further up the pitch, and then you have to play a different kind of football at the back,” said the central defender.

“That’s not my style. That’s not the type of football player I am. I like to keep the ball on the ground. And I’m going to keep doing that.
