Liverpool FC’s Dirk Kuyt back at Utrecht with Europa League ambition

DIRK KUYT is ready for a “special” return to the club where his career began – while underlining his determination not to leave Liverpool without winning a trophy.

Kuyt was part of a strong Anfield squad – which included Fernando Torres – that flew to Holland yesterday for tonight’s Europa League Group K clash with FC Utrecht.

It was when with the Dutch side that the 30-year-old won the domestic cup in 2003, his first and so far only major honour despite three years at Feyenoord and a further four with Liverpool.

Kuyt was among the first-team regulars who could only look on last Wednesday as the route to Carling Cup glory was closed by the home humiliation against Northampton.

And while uncertainty continues to engulf Anfield, Kuyt is confident he can win silverware with Liverpool and regards the Europa League as an opportunity to end his trophy drought.

“I have still got the belief that we can do it,” said Kuyt. “It’s been four years that I haven’t won anything at Liverpool.

“Sometimes you can be really close and miss it and that’s unfortunately what has happened to me, we finished second in the Premier League and lost a Champions League final.
