A 53rd-minute Sotirios Kyrgiakos header wasn’t enough after a Charlie Adam penalty and Luke Varney’s well-taken strike earned the Seasiders their first win over Liverpool since 1967.
Defeat means Liverpool have taken just six points from seven games, their worst start to a top-flight season since 1953-54 when they were relegated.
Hodgson also had to contend with the Kop chanting for Kenny Dalglish, the popular choice to follow Rafael Benitez as manager in the summer.
