Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard
DIRK KUYT is convinced Liverpool will be challenging for silverware next season – as Steven Gerrard eyed a comeback for the reunion with Roy Hodgson.
Kuyt is close to agreeing a new deal that will further an Anfield commitment that began with his £9million move from Feyenoord in August 2006.
The 30-year-old, who is contracted until 2013, is expected to put pen to paper on a 12-month extension.
Kuyt believes the January arrival of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll has strengthened a squad in which he expects to see further major arrivals during the summer.
And having previously backed Kenny Dalglish to be made permanent manager, the Dutchman envisages Liverpool to be back among the hunt of silverware in the new campaign.
“Liverpool is a club that should be playing for trophies and I guarantee that will happen soon,” said Kuyt.
“With Luis and Andy arriving, we have become a stronger and I have a strong suspicion that the club will reinforce again in the summer. This helps my belief that we will be playing for trophies again next season.
“I want to stay because the club is showing ambition, the team is getting stronger and my family and I absolutely love it here. I hope I will sign my contract very soon. I had a chance to move last summer when Inter knocked on the door and showed serious interest. But Liverpool wanted to keep me. They showed respect and confidence in me and I am not a club hopper.”
Meanwhile, Anfield skipper Gerrard is expected to return to training next week and could be back in action for the visit to West Bromwich Albion on April 2.
