Andy Carroll 300
LIVERPOOL will fight plans by the Football Association to call up Andy Carroll for this summer’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals.
Carroll, along with Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, has been earmarked by U21 manager Stuart Pearce for the tournament in Denmark, which runs between June 11 and 25.
Pearce met the pair on Tuesday and is keen for them to appear, despite both being poised to start for the full national team in tomorrow’s Euro 2012 qualifier in Wales.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish spoke last week of the need for England to handle Carroll with care after the striker missed almost three months of the season with a thigh injury.
And the Anfield outfit are unhappy that Carroll could be called up by England for their qualifier against Switzerland on June 4 and then asked to turn out for the U21s, who have been drawn in the same group as Spain, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
Pearce, though, has claimed both Carroll and Wilshere are eager to answer their country’s call in the summer.
“Were they receptive to playing? I think so,” he said. “I was suitably impressed when I looked around the room at the talent pool that I had in front of me.
“There’s some real talent in this country in this age group. If we’re going to win anything at senior level, we have to be successful at these younger age groups and enhance the team spirit that will ultimately help the seniors.
“I want the best English players to be available for the major Under-21 tournaments and the aim is to win something.
“These players not only will have a great experience, but can then take senior international football in their stride, just as James Milner, Joe Hart, Glen Johnson and Theo Walcott have done.”
Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has allayed any injury fears after withdrawing from international duty this week.
The 24-year-old was substituted in the 2-0 win over Sunderland on Sunday soon after scoring a brilliant individual goal.
It was initially thought the Uruguay international had a groin injury, but it may have been linked to a back problem.
