Kenny Dalglish 300
KENNY DALGLISH is ready to turn to Liverpool’s youngsters after his worst injury fears were realised yesterday.
The Anfield outfit confirmed Daniel Agger will miss the remainder of the season with the knee problem sustained during the 2-1 defeat at West Bromwich Albion last Saturday.
And Dalglish’s defensive resources have been further damaged by both Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly being ruled out for up to a month with hamstring injuries.
Johnson pulled up after only eight minutes at The Hawthorns while Kelly aggravated an earlier setback during training.
While Fabio Aurelio has returned to training, the Brazilian has played only 24 minutes since limping out of the Europa League clash at Sparta Prague on February 17.
It leaves Jamie Carragher, Sotirios Kyrgiakos and Martin Skrtel as the only senior match-fit defenders available to Dalglish for at least the next three weeks.
Danny Wilson, who came off the bench to fill in at left-back at the weekend, could be asked to reprise the role, although teenage full-backs Jack Robinson – already the club’s youngest-ever first-team player – and Jonathan Flanagan will both be called up to the senior ranks.
Of the injuries, Dalglish said: “Daniel (Agger) has a problem with the tendon behind his knee and won’t be involved again this season. He’ll be out for a couple of months before he can start training.
“Glen Johnson has a hamstring problem which is usually about three or four weeks and it’s the same for Martin Kelly.
“It’s disappointing for the players because they want to play in every game.
“We’re getting towards the end of the season but if you’re injured you’re injured.
“We feel for them but the most important people at the football club are the ones who are fit and able to play. We have to get on with what we’ve got.
“But Fabio Aurelio and Jonjo Shelvey are training again and David Ngog had a game for the reserves on Monday. So we’ve lost some but we’ve got a few back.”
