Liverpool FC manager Kenny Dalglish deflects praise onto his players after 5-0 victory over Birmingham

KENNY DALGLISH admits he was touched by the chants of his name from the terraces – but wants the praise directed at Liverpool’s players.

Since taking the reigns in January, caretaker manager Dalglish has overseen a remarkable upturn in Liverpool’s fortunes which now sees them within three points of a Europa League qualification place.

Although Dalglish’s future as Liverpool manager is likely to remain undecided until the end of the season, the Anfield faithful continue to show their backing for the club legend.

The latest triumph in Dalglish’s second stint in the hot seat came with Saturday’s 5-0 thumping of Birmingham City and means Liverpool continue to breathe down the necks of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, increasing the calls for the Scot to be handed the job permanently by the club’s American owners.

However Dalglish deflected the tributes onto his players.

“I said if I could come back and help I would do,” said Dalglish.

“They asked and I have come and if I helped and the supporters have enjoyed it then so have I.

“On my own situation, there is nothing to be announced. For me, it is an honour to be here and an honour to have been asked.

“If the punters are enjoying it then so are we. It is humbling when they chant my name but it would be better for me if they chanted the players’ names because they are the ones who are doing the business on the pitch.

“We got our own house in order and came away with a comprehensive victory and three points more. We are happy with the way the game has gone.

“We will get what we get from our games for what we put into them, not the history.”
