Academy football: Liverpool under-18s close in on Group C title after mauling of Wolves

LIVERPOOL under-18s need just one more win to land the Barclays Premier Academy League Group C title after a 4-0 success at Wolverhampton Wanderers yesterday.

An opening goal from Toni Silva and a second-half hat-trick from substitute Michael Ngoo secured Rodolfo Borrell’s youngsters the three points to move them to within two points of current leaders Everton.

With Liverpool’s Mersey rivals having completed their fixtures another win over Wolves at the Kirkby Academy (kick-off 11am) this Friday would see Borrell’s side top the north west section and go through to the national play-off semi-finals.

Liverpool took the lead at Wolves after just three minutes when Adam Hajdu played Krisztian Adorjan in on the edge of the area. But although the Hungarian was blocked by a defender Silva fired in the loose ball to open the scoring.

Icelandic striker Kristjan Emilsson was denied by the Wolves keeper as Liverpool pressed forward, while at the other end the only chance Wolves had was when Sam Whittle's header came back off the bar.

Silva went close, but it wasn’t until the second half and the introduction of Ngoo that Borrell’s side sealed the victory.

The tall former Southend striker had earned Liverpool a point with a penalty at Sheffield United at the weekend.

And he took just two minutes to make another telling contribution after coming on at half-time.

He coolly finished from Adorjan's pass.

Adorjan and Ngoo both went close before the former set up the latter for his second goal.

Ngoo completed his hat-trick in injury time.

LIVERPOOL UNDER-18s: Belford, Rafferty, McGiveron, Coady, Sama, Hajdu, Roddan, Silva (Walsh 85), Adorjan (Hatch 85), Mukendi, Emilsson (Ngoo 46). subs: Stephens, King.
