King Kenny Dalglish 300
KENNY DALGLISH admits Liverpool’s summer spending spree is on hold until they can trim their oversized squad.
Bankrolled by owners Fenway Sports Group, the Anfield outfit have embarked on a major recruitment drive during the transfer window by splashing out almost £50million on new players.
Last week’s £20m signing of Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing followed the arrivals of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, Blackpool’s Charlie Adam and Roma goalkeeper Doni.
But Liverpool manager Dalglish has admitted he must now sell some of his fringe players before any further purchases.
Speaking to a fans’ forum in Ireland, Dalglish said: “We’re delighted with the work we’ve done. Whether there’s more remains to be seen and depends on players going out.”
Nevertheless, Dalglish and director of football Damien Comolli continue to monitor a number of targets, with Atletico Madrid’s Uruguayan centre-back Diego Godin among them.
Liverpool have thus far only sold Paul Konchesky to Leicester City for around £1.5m in an attempt to help balance the books.
They would be willing to listen to offers for a number of other players, with the likes of Philipp Degen, Nabil El Zhar, Emiliano Insua, Brad Jones and Milan Jovanovic all surplus to requirements.
