Alexander Doni
NEW Liverpool goalkeeper Alexander Doni admits he could not pass up the opportunity of a move to Anfield.
Brazil international Doni was signed last week from Italian side AS Roma to provide experienced cover for first-choice number one Pepe Reina.
With no European football, Doni could find his first-team opportunities limited during the coming season.
But the keeper nevertheless believes he has made the right move to link up with compatriots Lucas Leiva and Fabio Aurelio.
“It is an honour to be at a club like Liverpool after leaving Roma,” said Doni.
“I was happy at Roma but Liverpool is one of those clubs that when the opportunity to go there comes along you have to take it with both hands.
“I would like to thank everyone at Roma and the fans for what they did for me during my time there and I am excited about my new challenge at Liverpool.
“I am looking forward to playing for the Liverpool fans and it will help I will have my fellow Brazilians Lucas and Fabio Aurelio there to help me settle in and I promise to do my best for the club.”
Doni will make a first appearance for his new club tomorrow when Liverpool continue their pre-season programme with a visit to Championship side Hull City.
Summer signings Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson should also make their debuts at the KC Stadium, where Alberto Aquilani will be hoping to continue the impressive form he demonstrated during the 6-3 win over a Malaysia XI last Saturday.
And despite Fiorentina preparing a bid for the midfielder, Aquilani’s agent has suggested the player is still preparing for further life at Liverpool.
“Aquilani will certainly stay at Liverpool,” said Franco Zavaglia.
“Alberto has got over his ankle problem, he’s back in the international set-up and has the characteristics needed to do well in the Premier League. He’s in pre-season training with Liverpool and has played in all of the team’s summer tour games so far.”
