Hillsborough online petition over Margaret Thatcher files passes 100,000 signatures mark

THE HILLSBOROUGH online petition to force the government to release files relating to the stadium disaster has passed 100,000 signatures.

Now MPs will have to consider staging a Commons debate on the issue.

The government is coming under increasing pressure to release details of Margaret Thatcher’s private Cabinet discussions on the Hillsborough football disaster, in which 96 Liverpool FC fans died.

The petition was launched following a ruling by the Information Commissioner Christopher Graham that the papers should now be made public.

But the Cabinet Office has said it will appeal against the decision, arguing that all papers relating to the April 1989 tragedy should go to the Hillsborough Independent Panel and the families of victims, first before being put on wider release.
