Liverpool FC's Sotirios Kyrgiakos goes to Wolfsburg on free transfer with more transfer activity to come

LIVERPOOL FC have sold Sotirios Kyrgiakos to Wolfsburg and the Anfield outfit are poised for a flurry of further transfer transactions in the final week of the transfer window.

Greek international defender Kyrgiakos, 32, returned to the Bundesliga last night for an undisclosed fee after previously playing for Eintracht Frankfurt between 2006-2008.

The former Rangers defender was signed by Rafael Benitez from AEK Athens in the summer of 2009 for £1.5million and made 49 appearances for Liverpool although his first team opportunities reduced after Kenny Dalglish’s return.

Kyrgiakos, who has penned a two-year deal, said: “Wolfsburg are a good club. They won the championship in 2009.

“I’m here to play and I would like to play every game.

“I am fit and ready, but the coach decides when and if I get to play.”

His exit will ensure that Dalglish steps up his search for a new centre-back with the Scot already having been linked to Bolton Wanderers’ England international Gary Cahill and lifelong Liverpool fan Scott Dann, of relegated Birmingham City.

However with Dalglish having already splashed out £44million on midfield trio Steward Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, Liverpool – who missed out on Phil Jones who joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers – are finding Barclays Premier League recruits costly and one potentially cheaper alternative on their radar is giant Uruguayan defender Sebastian Coates.
