Charlie Adam and Steven Gerrard
CHARLIE ADAM has dismissed suggestions he dived to win the free-kick that helped Liverpool earn a point against Manchester United at the weekend.
Steven Gerrard scored on 68 minutes after referee Andre Marriner adjudged Adam had been felled by United defender Rio Ferdinand narrowly outside the penalty area.
Television replays indicated there was a coming together between the two players, although Ferdinand said: “There was the slightest contact but not enough to make a guy who’s 12-13 stone fall like that.”
Adam, however, claims he was fouled, and responded: “Well, everyone has an opinion.
“I felt a touch and if I hadn’t gone down I would have been clear through on goal so there must have been contact.
“That’s the way I look at it. I felt contact when I went past Rio and that’s the way it goes.
“I’m not just going to go down easily. I’m not that type of player. It was a foul and that is why the referee gave it and Steven’s goal was just different class.
“That is why he is one of the best players in the world.”
United fought back and equalised with nine minutes remaining when substitute Javier Hernandez capitalised on some slack Liverpool marking from a corner.
However, Kenny Dalglish’s side would have earned all three points late on but for two stunning saves from United goalkeeper David de Gea to deny Dirk Kuyt and Jordan Henderson.
