Lucas 300
FEW players demonstrate the value of persistence as much as Lucas Leiva. And few players can have endured a greater baptism of fire at Liverpool FC than the Brazilian.
During those difficult first steps following his arrival at Anfield in the summer of 2007, it seemed inconceivable that supporters would be lamenting his absence.
But with suspension ruling Lucas out of tomorrow’s Premier League visit of Norwich City, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish admits the midfielder will be a significant loss.
“He’s been fantastic this season for us,” says the Scot. “It will be a miss. But he’ll serve his game and it’s up to us to overcome that.
“At the end of the day that’s what you have a strong squad for – to overcome injuries and suspensions. This is the first suspension of the season so we have to cover it.
“We have to make sure that, although we are saying he is a loss before the game, we are not saying the same thing afterwards.”
Indeed, Lucas’s consistent level during the past 18 months meant it was noticeable when he temporarily dipped below those standards in last week’s 1-1 home draw with Manchester United.
But that Dalglish felt secure in placing his trust in the player despite his long journey to play for Brazil during the preceding international break indicates the regard with which Lucas is held.
“On Saturday (against Manchester United) he was a wee bit unfortunate that I decided to play him after the journey he’d had,” says the manager. “It maybe took more out of him than I thought.
“I can only comment on what he’s done since I came in and since then he’s been as good as anyone we’ve had. He’s done his job fantastically well. He’s a really good professional and a good guy in and around the place.
“We are delighted with the rewards he is getting on the pitch and if the fans can recognise what he is doing then that is obviously helpful to him.”
